Part IV · Creating Regenerative Systems

Chapter 11 · 3 minute introduction

Community as Medicine

Social structures that support health

Connection is not merely emotional comfort. Social relationships, trust, shared resources and the built environment shape stress, behaviour, opportunity and health across the lifespan.

01

Social determinants

Income, housing, education, discrimination, transport, food access and social support can influence health more powerfully than individual wellness choices. Community design distributes both opportunity and burden.

02

Belonging and reciprocity

Reliable relationships can buffer stress and provide practical help, meaning and accountability. Healthy community is not constant harmony; it includes boundaries, repair, fair participation and room for difference.

03

Skills and shared capacity

Tool libraries, gardens, mentoring, community kitchens and local exchange can reduce duplication while building competence. Digital tools are most useful when they strengthen rather than replace embodied connection.

Put the principle into practice

Three grounded ways to begin

  1. Join one repeated local activity where relationships can deepen over time.
  2. Offer a useful skill and ask for help when needed.
  3. Notice who is excluded from community resources and why.

Evidence context

Established

Social isolation and adverse social determinants are associated with poorer health outcomes.

Supported

Walkable, connected neighbourhoods can support activity and social interaction.
